Primitive Wellness - For those out there that may not be familiar with the pair of you can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you came to be the Paleo Parents?

Paleo Parents - Stacy is a full time working mom and Matt is a stay at home dad. We have three active kids and live in a pretty typical suburb of Washington, DC. We had both been struggling with not only our weight, but also a variety of smaller health problems. From allergies to anxiety to depression to high cholesterol to acne, we were showing all the tiny signs of disordered diet that most people just dismiss as “a part of life.” But we weren’t the only ones suffering. Both Cole, then 5 and Finian, then 3, were also creeping up the BMI charts and had their own issues, like asthma, eczema, strange rashes and other odd health conditions.

Then, after our youngest, Wesley, was born, Stacy was searching for recipes when she first encountered the intriguing phrase “paleo diet.” Within days she was tearing through books and throwing out our pantry staples. Soon after, when Matt saw that she was feeling amazing, loosing weight and getting healthy, the rest of the family adopted this new diet as well.

PW - What inspired you to start PaleoParents.com and begin your blogging adventure?

PPPaleo Parents started as a small Tumblr that Stacy used to explain what she was doing to her friends. After she found such success and got her friends hooked as well, we thought that there might be a need for our story in the greater public. We moved over to a proper domain and took our clothes off for our before and after pictures.

We think that so many families are like we were: very sick without even realizing it. Seeing that a normal family can live this lifestyle with their children is inspiring to people who are faced with a giant sized mission and don’t know where to start.

ELAD-COVER-FRONT

PW - Last year you released your first cookbook geared towards children called Eat Like A Dinosaur (love the title by the way), why did you think it was important to release a child-friendly cookbook?

PP – Before we were paleo, we used to own quite a few children’s cookbooks. Frequently our son, Cole, who has ambitions of being a chef when he grows up, would get one down and pick out a recipe to make with us. Soon after we changed our diet, we realized that he couldn’t do that anymore; all of our cookbooks were chock full of candy and wheat snacks and it was incredibly hard to find even a single recipe he could eat.

We set out to change that for him ourselves. We figured that every kid ought to have a book they can pull out and cook from any page. We also thought that we could show our family, and Cole himself, to children in the book to show them that they could be “normal” and eat healthy. It’s been a true shock that people now have this book in their homes and their children use it the same way ours do.

PW – This summer you released you’re second cookbook, (congratulations!) this time embarking on another area some might be unfamiliar with and that is the world Beyond Bacon. What can we expect from your new book and do you have a favorite recipe we should all be looking out for?

PP – Our latest book is called Beyond Bacon and we intended it to be the complete guide to buying a whole pig and eating every part of it. People in paleo often pay lip service to the idea of pasture-raised animals, but there aren’t a whole lot of resources out there on how that process works and why it’s so important. We chose the pig because it’s our favorite and because bacon is so celebrated in our community, we thought that the rest of the hog ought to be explored as well.

PW - If this all wasn’t enough you, Stacy, also co-hosts the incredibly popular podcast The Paleo View with the lovely Sarah Ballantyne which is produced by Matthew. What is the question that you get asked the most and why do you think that is?

PP – It seems we are so often asked simply questions that have expansive answers. How do I do paleo on a budget? How do I get my kids on board? If I do “X”, am I still paleo? How do I lose weight or recover from disease? People get so overwhelmed in the beginning that these questions become obsessions for some people. Really, I think they need reassurance that they are moving in the right direction.

PW - Finally, what is the best piece of advice you can give to other Paleo Parents out there?

PP – Always remember that you are doing what you feel is the best you can do for your family and don’t get upset if you can’t always be perfect.

Be sure to tune in this Thursday for the fall premiere of Primal Palate: The Experience!
